Hi everyone, I hope you have kept safe and well over the past 12 months and after a difficult spell the end is on the horizon!

I will be returning for my second season as 2nd XI captain in the Devon league hoping to carry on where we left off in 2019. After the Devon league was postponed last summer, we were lucky to have a reduced season playing against Barnstaple, Bideford and Braunton 1s. A good challenge to see how much we had progressed.

As everyone had expected after weeks and weeks of amazing weather, we lost 2/6 games to the weather. We manged to beat Barnstaple but unfortunately we came 2nd best against Braunton after being 1.01 to win the game. We also lost to Bideford home and away. Though there were plenty of positives to take away. Former colt James Starkey returning and partnering Simon Wright with the new ball gave us a lot of control early on, Also joining Starkey was Westleigh teammate Rick Wild who showed some moments of class with the bat and hoping we see a lot more of them this season.

This season targets? I believe there is no reason why we can’t be pushing for another promotion but to do that we have to stop bowling 25+ wides every game as it will be costly most weeks as last summer showed. I’m getting good vibes from Joe Kelly, Ed Yeo and Jimmer Thomas about their availability who all have a lot of runs and match winning innings in them. Reuben Windley will be in opening the batting and if he gets any runs early doors I feel it wont be long till he’s in the 1st XI. With the ball I would like to see youngsters Nathan Ware, Will Popham and Ethan Cross take their chance and cement there place in the side having performed so well in recent seasons in the 3rd XI and showed glimpses in the games they have played in the 2nd XI so far.

Hopefully see you all soon!!
