Captain’s Message

Captains Message – Tom Popham, 1st XI Captain

I am very excited and honoured about becoming the Devon league captain for the forthcoming season. It is a fantastic opportunity and a privilege to lead such a talented and ambitious group of players and to play our cricket at the best ground and in the best surroundings that Devon has to offer. I would like to thank last season’s captain, Matt Westaway for his outstanding leadership and hard work throughout the season and we all look forward to seeing him continue on the cricket field (rather than the golf course..) again taking plenty of wickets and belting a few more final balls for six! The team and I will benefit from the extensive experience and knowledge of both Richard Screech as vice captain and AJ Isherwood, a hugely ambitious and committed cricketer, who returns as our overseas player after a successful first season. The team is further strengthened by the returning Ben Howe, who is available for the entire season, as well as welcoming young local talents in Fred King and Josh Atkinson to the squad. We already have some high quality performers at the club including Dan Bowser, who was superb last season with over 600 runs despite missing a number of games with a broken finger; Josh King, who again led the bowling attack brilliantly every week despite bowling for much of the season still recovering from shoulder surgery and also showed his attacking skills with the bat on a number of occasions. He again represented Devon CCC alongside my brother Jack, who, when fit, can be a real match winner and Ed Yeo, who deservedly earned a first call up after many strong seasons at North Devon. With an ever growing group of talented, hard-working and committed local cricketers as well as a good balance of youth and experience in the squad, I am confident we can put in strong performances against any team in the league this season. I look forward to seeing you all at some point throughout the season and your support will be greatly appreciated by the team.
